Next Steps Group

Next Steps Group

This group is a structured therapy group for clients who have had a period of one-to-one therapy with icap. When moving on from one to one therapy, clients can experience a range of feelings including a sense of loss, sadness, anger and fear, as well as excitement, independence and autonomy.
This group is an opportunity for attendees to think about their life in a structured way and make clear plans for the future and areas of their life that they would like to focus on with the support of the group.

A typical group session will consist of a short (10 min) Mindfulness exercise, an opening check in round and some Psychoeducational exercises.

The group helps members to identify the areas and issues that they need support with and to creatively come up with ways that they can address those concerns.

The overall aim of the group is to help clients have a sense of autonomy and optimism for their future. All sessions will have a focus however it is expected as the group progresses that the group members themselves will take an active role in the planning and focus of the group sessions including working on their own personal action plans. Group members will be expected to actively engage in this process and take more of a lead in the sessions.

There are weekly tasks for group members to complete in their own time, mostly in the form of keeping a journal. The format of the sessions includes working with mindfulness.

Clients are asked to commit to trying out the various exercises and tools used in the sessions. At the end of the sessions clients will have a personal toolbox for what works for them individually.
Topics covered include: managing thought and thought challenging, managing and regulating emotions, practising self-care, life planning and problem solving. Other topics will be determined by the particular interest/needs of the clients.

The group runs in person at icap fortnightly on Tuesdays, 2pm – 3.30pm

Members can attend up to 25 sessions. The group runs in 10 week modules. New members can join at the start of a 10 week module.

Referral can be self or therapist and after an initial meeting with the facilitator, prospective members will need to attend a minimum of 3 1:1 sessions with the therapist to prepare them to join the group.

HSE clients don’t pay to attend otherwise attendees pay the same fee as their individual therapy.
