Q. Is psychotherapy confidential?

Yes. What you say in psychotherapy remains private between therapist and client, except that it may be discussed in supervision (in accordance with ethical guidelines). Otherwise only in rare circumstances, where the client may be at risk of hurting herself or himself or another person, might the therapist have to break confidentiality. In extreme cases where this may be necessary, you therapist will advise you of the need to break confidentiality. This is not a decision that is taken lightly.
